CHAPTER 29

Mrs. Peach seemed okay with being left alone, since her husband’s body had been removed from the house. Erin had the distinct impression that Mrs. Peach wanted to finish her cleaning for the day, which included the living room and the couch. That was why she had been unable to let Mr. Peach sleep any longer and had tried to wake him up. Now that they were out of there, Erin was sure she was going to be vacuuming the living room and the crevices of the couch and making sure that everything was crisp and clean and tidy.

In a similar vein, Erin didn’t want to stay home, but wanted to finish out the day as she had planned, back at Auntie Clem’s Bakery. Terry offered to drive her even though she had her car. Erin suspected it was because he wanted to talk to her on the way over. It meant that he would need to pick her up again after work if he didn’t want her to walk, but then he would be home in good time, despite the investigation into Mr. Peach’s death.

“She’s a tough old bird,” Terry told Erin in the quiet of the car. “She’ll be okay.”

“I know. She’s used to living alone; I would be more worried about her getting used to living with someone else than I am with her being by herself. And she has friends she can call on.”

“I want you to tell me everything you can about what happened this morning. From the time that you saw him to the time that you left the house. And anything else that might be related.”

“Well…” Erin thought back to tidying up that morning and seeing Mr. Peach on the sidewalk. Had it really all just happened in one day? It seemed like a week ago. “I was getting ready for work when I saw someone stumbling along the sidewalk.”

“Stumbling?”

“Yes. He was tripping and lurching and having a hard time keeping his balance. Then he fell right down. Then I could see who it was, and I went out to help him up.”

Terry nodded, his eyes on the road. He didn’t tell her that she should have been more careful, that she might have been putting herself in danger helping a man she didn’t really know. She could have woken Terry up and gotten him to help.

But he didn’t. He just listened. Erin went on, telling him how she had helped Mr. Peach to his feet, walked him to the door, and woken Mrs. Peach up. Then she had helped to get him settled for sleep and returned home.

Terry was nodding. “What did he have to say? Did he talk about where he had been or anything like that? Did he talk about the will?”

“He seemed to be worried about Mrs. Peach. Whether she was okay. He asked me that more than once. And he wanted me to give her the envelope. I didn’t know it was his will. He never said.”

“He
